We’ve all been there for hours contemplating which colours to choose, with what type of furnishings, etc for your new room renovation, but at the end of the day unless you actually start creating, all your ideas are kept up in your head and will never be put into practice….
Whatever your inspiration is …… get it down on paper!
Here are a few tips which I find very useful…….
1. Write ideas in a journal, get pinning on Pinterest, take photos when out and about, source ideas from the brilliant range of magazines available, tear out anything and everything that inspires you, don’t think too hard at this point, just go with the flow.
2. Create 3 different inspiration boards for a particular room/space……one that I have in mind, with colours, fabrics, finishings, etc and two that I’m inspired by but wouldn’t necessary choose this time…..I think this way you get a good range of ideas and maybe one for the future so keep everything!
3. A5 sheets of cardboard are useful to arrange my ideas, take photos of these as you are creating, this way you can see how everything looks together on camera.
4. Brilliant……by this point I’m always pretty excited as I know which inspiration board I’m looking at! Now time to source colours, floor coverings, furnishings, etc!
5. Create a design/mood board from your findings…….you must have seen the umpteen tv programmes showing you how to create a mood board so this should come easy!
6. You can also at this point start to get an idea of where you would like to place any objects within the room, if you have a particular piece you cannot live without now’s a good time to incorporate it into your design………think about lighting, where the light comes in, do you need to add floor standing, wall hanging or ceiling lights……think about views out of the windows, do you want to make the most of them, or are happy to stare at a piece of artwork on the wall!
7. Get painting……once you are happy with your ideas nothing transforms a room better than a good lick of paint. I love this bit as it totally changes the mood and look of the room…..no going back now!
8. Flooring……. hmmmm what will you choose. Wood flooring, carpet, polished resin……concrete! There are so many options out there…….once fitted the room is on the finishing streak…….
9. Styling a room within an inch of it’s life is so very personal to you! We are all different and our homes should reflect our own personalities……..all too often rooms are bland, sole less, messy and have no proper use to the actual room home owners are hoping to use it for! So get styling…….
10. Step back and give the designer in you a pat on the back! You’ve done it……..Ok it may have taken a few tweeks here and there but that doesn’t matter, you have now transformed a room/space into a useable area!
Oh and don’t forget to take a before and after…….
